There is an increasing interest into Karl Polanyi’s framework and method of analysis in under-standing today’s problems of neoliberalism as well as in thinking about their solution. Polanyi’s once marginal influence began to permeate the collective consciousness of the social sciences. This paper looks at frameworks used for description, analysis, and prediction in the three areas of economic growth, equality, and development, while also highlighting some important past and current trends. The algorithmic revolution and cloud computing are the foundations of the platform economy. While platforms offer many benefits, they also raise concerns about market concentration, data privacy, labor rights, and competition. In the not-so-distant future supposedly smart technological systems may be deployed to maximize human productivity throughout our lives. Powerful investors have pursued and will continue to pursue their utopian vision of a world governed by smart-tech systems.
