The article presents the key constitutional characteristics of Slovakian local
government units, as well as actions that were taken to reinstate the local government and
introduce further changes, whose expected result would be the structural and functional
optimization of local government units, most importantly the Slovakian communes. The
article is mainly concerned with the ongoing debate over the condition of Slovakian
communes and the projects to refine them. The analysis of the resolutions proposed by the
central and local government leads to the belief that the consolidation process will not be
over soon, and the inefficiency is meant to last. The local development and public wellbeing
are being dwarfed by the interests of political parties and other lobby groups in the form of
major national self-government organizations.
