Using categories developed by the late Zygmunt Bauman, the article focuses on commodification in solid and liquid modernity, which he sees as the overarching goal of politics. In the first part, author discusses the mechanisms of commodification of labour in the heavy, producer phase of modernity, highlighting issues such as panoptic power and Fordist mechanisms of production. It then analyses the commodification of consumption and the individual’s treatment of himself as a commodity. It concludes by writing about the need to de-commodify social relations.
