This article is focusing on the issue of the destruction of art works regulated by
law in different historical periods. This overview is intended to demonstrate the
continuity of the problems associated with the need to determine the legal status
of older art in the transitional period between the following political and social
systems. This elaboration draws the attention to the relationship between law,
the preservation of art works, and the change of opinion on the role of religion
as a regulator of social relations. Additionally, this article outlines the historical
transformation of the way in which law regulated visual arts. It shows the connection
between today’s disputes about images in the context of international war conflicts
with the earlier religious changes on the European continent.
