ABSTRACT
The aim of the paper is to analyse both the significance of the three-decade dominance on the Montenegrin party scene of the Democratic Party of Socialists (the longest ruling party, not only in the post-Yugoslav contries, but also in the whole CEE region) and the reasons behind its electoral defeat in 2020 and 2023. In the analysis of the DPS’s longevity in power and then its loss the theories of party change as well as of democratic trasition were applied. Above all, the focus was placed on the functioning of the so-called hybrid regimes and the phenomenon of democratic backsliding.
